(1802-1839)
Born in London, he was educated at Eton College, where he founded the school journal, the Etonian. He read classics at Trinity College, Cambridge. There he won medals for Greek odes and for epigrams and the chancellor's medal for English poem "Australasia" (1823) and for "Athens" (1824). After graduating B.A. in 1825, he became private tutor at Eton to Lord Ernest Bruce, younger son of the Marquis of Ailesbury. He was elected fellow at Trinity in 1827 and was called to the bar in 1829. He was in Parliament on the Tory benches from 1830 to 1832 and from 1834 until he died of tuberculosis. He was buried at Kensal Green Cemetery, London. Many of his poems appeared in newspapers, periodicals and annuals. His Poems, with a memoir by his friend Derwent Coleridge, appeared in 1864. Selections (1866) and Political and Occasional Poems (1888) were published by Sir George Young. Some of his poems: "A Child's Grave," "Arminius," "Arrivals at a Watering-Place," "One More Quadrille," "The Chaunt of the Brazen Head," "The County Ball," "The Covenanter's Lament for Bothwell Brigg," "The Red Fisherman," "The Troubadour."
